Claudius (41-54), Sestertius, Rome, 42; Γ† (26,97 g; 34 mm; 6 h)

TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG PM TR P IMP P P Laureate head of Claudius to r.; Rv. SPES AVGVSTA Spes draped advancing to l., r. hand holding flower, l. raising skirt, S C in exergue, countermarked NCAPR in rectangular block. RIC 99; Cohen 85. BMC 116 [same countermark, p.181]. Good very fine.

BMC notes that this countermarked type (p. xxxi) stands for Nero Caesar Augustus Probavit. It appears on many contemporary coin types, including those of Claudius, and was in part applied to the coinage during periods when the senatorial mint was inactive. The type may also be naturally associated with the expedition to Britain and the conquest of the island.
