A large Late Renaissance agate cameo set in a silver pendant. Bust of Athena., End of 16th century- early 17th
32 x 37 mm; 18,70 gr.
The goddess is depicted with a three-quarter bust and an helmeted head in profile. She wears a sturdy armor with the gorgoneion. Her profile is marked, with sculptural features. The helmet shows a chiseled decoration with fantasy motifs on it. The cameo is partly damaged and restored frontally, in the background, but the stone is solid in the ancient silver mount. A piece of generous dimensions, characterized by the typical transitional style between the late Renaissance and the Baroque.
